What is Radon Mitigation

Radon mitigation is any system made to reduce the amount of radon in an indoor environment or building. The main goal of a radon mitigation system is to bring the radon levels down to what the EPA currently lists as the maximum safe amount of 4 pCi/L (picocuries of radon per liter of air). This is essential as excessive radon levels can lead to cancer. How to reduce radon levels will depend on your home and its layout.

Most radon reduction systems are effective within as little as 24 hours after instillation. Additionally, a radon reduction system will help keep humidity levels down as radon enters your home via small cracks or seams in your basement foundation which can also allow for the passage of water vapor. This is a good thing to do if you are planning on selling your home, or to ensure the safety of your family’s health.

As previously noted, what type of house you have will determine what system will be best suited for radon mitigation and removal. It largely depends on what style of foundation you have in your home. In many cases, a fan with subterranean pipes can help reduce the level of radon in your home. These are called “sub-slab depressurization” systems, and don’t require extensive modifications to your home. These systems can be installed in homes with crawl spaces or basements. Other types of systems include drain suction tile systems which vent the soil gasses outside, or a sub-membrane system which is used in crawl spaces with a plastic sheet covering exposed dirt on the floor and along walls. A pipe then takes the gases from under the sheet and pulls them outside.

Sealing cracks is also helpful in reducing radon in your home. However, it should not be the only method you use in radon reduction. Crack sealing in conjunction with a dedicated radon mitigation system is much more effective than just sealing the cracks alone.
